Growing Independence: Supporting Children to Learn, Explore, and Lead Their Own Play

March 16, 20263 min read

At Nature’s Little Learners Starbeck, we believe that some of the most powerful learning happens when children are given the freedom to explore, make choices, and follow their own ideas.

Every child is naturally curious. They want to investigate, test things out, and discover how the world around them works. When children are trusted to lead their own play, they develop confidence, resilience, and a genuine love of learning that stays with them for years to come.

Our role as educators is to guide, support, and encourage children as they take these important steps towards independence.

Encouraging Children to Make Choices

From the moment children arrive at nursery, they are given opportunities to make their own choices. Whether that means selecting an activity, choosing where they would like to play, or deciding which resources they would like to explore, these small decisions help children feel capable and confident.

Choice also helps children become more engaged in their learning. When children are interested in what they are doing, they naturally become more focused, creative, and motivated to explore further.

At Nature’s Little Learners Starbeck, we carefully create environments that allow children to access a wide range of resources independently. This encourages them to take the lead in their play while knowing our caring team is always nearby to support and extend their learning.

Learning Through Exploration

Exploration is at the heart of early years learning. Children learn best when they can touch, move, build, investigate, and experiment.

Our nursery environments are designed to spark curiosity and imagination. Open ended resources allow children to use their creativity in different ways each day. A simple basket of natural materials might become a woodland adventure, a building challenge, or a storytelling opportunity depending on the ideas children bring to their play.

By allowing children the time and space to explore freely, they begin to develop important problem solving skills. They learn to try new things, adapt their ideas, and celebrate their own achievements.

Supporting Confidence and Resilience

Independence is closely linked to confidence. When children are encouraged to try things for themselves, they begin to believe in their own abilities.

At Nature’s Little Learners Starbeck, our team supports children gently and positively as they take on new challenges. Whether it is putting on their coat, building a tall tower, or leading a game with their friends, these everyday moments help children develop resilience and self belief.

We celebrate effort just as much as success, helping children understand that learning often comes through trying, practising, and sometimes making mistakes.

Following Children’s Interests

Child led play allows us to follow children’s natural interests. When a child becomes fascinated by something, whether it is bugs in the garden, building structures, or storytelling with their friends, we build on that curiosity to create meaningful learning opportunities.

Our practitioners carefully observe children’s play and use these observations to extend their learning. This means activities feel exciting and relevant to the children rather than structured or forced.

When children feel heard and valued, their confidence grows and their enthusiasm for learning flourishes.

Preparing Children for the Future

Supporting independence in the early years gives children an incredible foundation for the future. Confident children are more willing to try new experiences, communicate their ideas, and develop positive relationships with others.

By encouraging children to explore, make decisions, and lead their own play, we are helping them build skills that will support them as they move through school and beyond.

At Nature’s Little Learners Starbeck, we are proud to nurture confident, capable little learners who are ready to explore the world around them.
